The Saskatoon Concert Band has a proud history of service and achievement. The band was originally organized in 1949 as the 23rd Wing Band, although historically there were predecessor organizations of considerable merit that contributed significantly to Saskatoon's music and cultural community.
In 1964, the 23rd Wing Band was re-organized as the Kinsmen Concert Band and operated in that fashion for many years. In the mid 1960's a portion of the Kinsmen Concert Band formed the H.M.C.S. Unicorn Band and participatied in Saskatchewan's Centennial year celebrations. The Saskatoon Concert Band is registered as a non-profit organization.
The band serves the community and the province in several ways. In our public concerts we have tried to provide a showcase for promising local musicians by featuring them as guest artists. We play park concerts during the summer and entertain our Senior Citizens at various times of the year. We donate our services on such occassions as the United Way Kickoffs, the occasional Royal Visit, and concerts in the Bessborough Park.
The Saskatoon Concert Band is really two bands, the Concert Band under the direction of Mr. A.G. Charpentier and the Auxiliary Band under the direction of Mr. Nick Todd. The Auxiliary Band was formed in 1987 to meet the needs of players who are developing their musical skills, or for those players who may be a bit rusty after several years without playing but have decided to pick up their instruments again. Between the two bands, we offer the opportunity for players of all skill levels to play at a level that is both challenging and satisfying to their individual needs. Concert Band rehearses on Wednesday evenings, and Auxiliary Band rehearses on Tuesday evenings. Both bands perform regularly at St. Joseph High School Theatre or Holy Cross Theatre in Saskatoon.
Last year the band performed a solid indoor and outdoor presentation in Biggar SK as a colorful part of the dedication of the Olympic Gold Sandra Shmirler Park.
The Concert Band plays an eclectic repertoire ranging from orchestral transcriptions, to modern band compositions, to marches, to Broadway musical hits.
