We are pleased to introduce you to our regular conductors, George Charpentier and Nick Todd. During the years, we are able to feature guest conductors for a portion of our concerts.
Neither band holds auditions. Prospective members of either band are welcome to participate in a few rehearsals at no cost to determine which ensemble fits their skills and whether they wish to continue as members. Both bands practice at our building, known as the John H. Schoen Rehearsal Hall, at 238 Ave V North.
The origins of the organization go back to the late 1940s as the 406 Royal
Canadian Air Force Band, subsequently known as the 23 Wing Band.
The band was transitioned into a civilian organization by conductor John H. Schoen (1924–2017), who inspired generations of musicians. The group became the Saskatoon Concert Band, a non-profit corporation, in 1982. Schoen directed the group until 1996.
In 2008, the Saskatchewan Band Association presented the Distinguished Band Director Award to John in recognition of his outstanding contribution to band, his strong musical leadership, and his consistent promotion of musical excellence in the province of Saskatchewan.
The newly renovated hall was named after John in 2015. The Auxiliary Band was formed in 1987. Today, the Concert Band is directed by George Charpentier, and the Auxiliary Band is lead by Nick Todd.
